Are Green Certifications Enough?
Green certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, Green Seal, and ENERGY STAR are useful starting points but are not sufficient for people with chemical sensitivity or heightened mold risk. These certifications were designed for the general population and set regulatory floors — minimum thresholds a product must pass. They do not set ceilings. A GREENGUARD Gold product may emit at levels well below or just barely below the threshold, and the certification does not tell you which. The Good Air Standard treats certifications as a screening filter, not a final answer, and requires manufacturer emissions documentation beyond the certification badge.
What Certifications Actually Certify
Building product certifications are pass/fail tests against defined thresholds. They answer one question: "Does this product emit below X level in a controlled test?" They do not answer: "Is this product appropriate for someone with chemical sensitivity?" or "How does this product perform when installed alongside 30 other products in an enclosed space?"
Understanding what each certification actually measures — and what it does not — prevents two common mistakes: dismissing certifications entirely (they do provide useful filtering) and trusting certifications completely (they are not designed for the sensitive audience).
Major Certifications Evaluated
GREENGUARD Gold (UL 2818)
What it tests: Individual product emissions in a controlled chamber after 7 days. Measures TVOC (≤220 µg/m³), formaldehyde (≤9 µg/m³), and individual compound limits.
What it gets right: Tests actual emissions, not just VOC content in the can. Includes formaldehyde-specific limits. More rigorous than many alternatives. Widely adopted — easy to specify.
What it misses: Tests products in isolation, not installed assemblies. Does not account for additive emissions from multiple certified products in one room. The 7-day test window may not capture slow-release compounds. Pass/fail reporting hides actual emission levels — a product emitting at 50 µg/m³ and one at 219 µg/m³ both pass. No testing for compounds outside the standard panel. Temperature and humidity in the test chamber may not match real installation conditions.
Good Air Standard position: GREENGUARD Gold is a useful screening filter. Specify it as a minimum, not a destination. Require the actual test report (available from manufacturers) rather than relying on the certification badge alone.
Green Seal (GS-11 for Paints)
What it tests: VOC content in the product formulation (g/L in the can). Flat paints ≤50 g/L, non-flat ≤100 g/L.
What it gets right: Limits VOC content at formulation. Easy to verify — check the label or technical data sheet.
What it misses: Measures VOC content in the can, not emissions from the applied product. Does not account for tinting (which can add significant VOC to a zero-VOC base). Does not test actual emissions in use. A paint could meet Green Seal g/L limits but emit compounds not classified as VOCs under the standard's definition.
Good Air Standard position: Green Seal is a minimum formulation requirement. It does not replace three-tier VOC disclosure, which requires knowing what the product emits during and after application, not just what is in the can.
SCAQMD Rule 1113 (South Coast Air Quality Management District)
What it regulates: VOC content limits for architectural coatings sold in the South Coast district of California. Flat coatings ≤50 g/L, non-flat ≤100 g/L, primers ≤100 g/L.
What it gets right: Regulatory mandate, not voluntary. Drives industry-wide formulation improvements. Most "low-VOC" paints sold nationally meet SCAQMD limits because manufacturers formulate for the most restrictive market.
What it misses: Same limitation as Green Seal — measures content, not emissions. Applies to coatings only, not adhesives, sealants, or substrates. Does not test for formaldehyde or individual harmful compounds. A product can be SCAQMD-compliant and still emit compounds that affect sensitive individuals.
Good Air Standard position: SCAQMD compliance is the regulatory floor. Products that do not meet it should not be considered. Products that do meet it have cleared the lowest bar.
ENERGY STAR
What it certifies: Energy efficiency. Period. ENERGY STAR has no indoor air quality component, no VOC testing, no emissions requirements.
Why it appears in this discussion: Marketing frequently conflates "energy efficient" with "healthy." A tightly sealed, energy-efficient home with poor material selection and inadequate ventilation concentrates indoor pollutants. Energy efficiency and indoor air quality are separate problems that require separate solutions. An ENERGY STAR home can have terrible indoor air quality. A healthy-air home can be energy efficient. The two are compatible but not synonymous.
Good Air Standard position: ENERGY STAR is irrelevant to indoor air quality evaluation. Do not use it as a proxy for healthy building.
ASHRAE 62.2 (Residential Ventilation)
What it specifies: Minimum ventilation rates for residential buildings. Defines how much fresh air per occupant and per square foot.
What it gets right: Establishes that tight buildings need mechanical ventilation. Provides calculable minimums. Widely referenced in building codes.
What it misses: Ventilation rates are designed for the general population, not sensitive occupants. ASHRAE 62.2 assumes a baseline level of indoor emissions from standard materials — it dilutes pollutants rather than preventing them. For sensitive occupants, dilution ventilation alone is not sufficient. The standard does not address construction-phase emissions, material selection, or source control.
Good Air Standard position: ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation is a necessary minimum. The Good Air Standard layers source control (material selection, three-tier VOC disclosure) and construction-phase management (Clean Air Construction Protocol) on top of code-minimum ventilation. "Air systems cannot save a wet wall" — and ventilation alone cannot save a chemically loaded room.
Passive House (PHI / PHIUS)
What it certifies: Extreme energy efficiency through super-insulation, airtightness, and heat recovery ventilation. Very specific heating/cooling demand targets.
What it gets right: Excellent airtightness (verified by blower door). Mandatory mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Thermal comfort without drafts. Reduced energy consumption.
What it misses: Passive House has no material emissions requirements. A Passive House certified home can use spray foam, high-VOC adhesives, OSB, paper-faced drywall, and any other material that meets the energy targets. Extreme airtightness without source control concentrates whatever emissions the materials produce. The ventilation system dilutes but does not eliminate indoor pollutants — and ventilation effectiveness depends on filter maintenance and system design.
Good Air Standard position: Passive House principles (airtightness, mechanical ventilation, thermal bridging reduction) are compatible with the Good Air Standard. The energy performance is excellent. But Passive House certification alone says nothing about indoor air quality. A Passive House built with Good Air Standard materials and protocols achieves both. A Passive House without material source control may have worse indoor air quality than a leaky conventional home.
The Floor, Not the Ceiling
Every certification on this page sets a floor — a minimum requirement that filters out the worst products or practices. None sets a ceiling — the level of performance needed for people with heightened chemical sensitivity. The gap between the floor and the ceiling is where the Good Air Standard operates.
The practical approach:
- Use certifications as a first filter. GREENGUARD Gold or CDPH v1.2 tested products are better starting points than products with no emissions testing at all.
- Then go further. Request the actual test report, not just the badge. Compare emission levels between certified products. Specify the lower-emitting option. Apply three-tier VOC disclosure to every material on the project.
- Control the source, not just the air. Ventilation helps. Filtration helps. But specifying materials that produce fewer emissions in the first place is more reliable and more permanent than diluting what they produce.
